For the promotion of lasting peace, development, security, and human rights must go hand in hand. There can be no security without development and no development without security. Neither can be sustained in the longer term without being rooted in the rule of law and respect for human rights.
Biography
NATO was formed in 1949 to defend Europe against the growing power of the Soviet Union. The original members were Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, the United Kingdom, the U.S., Canada, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The first secretary-general of the alliance, the British General Hastings Ismay, joked that the purpose of the organization was "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."

Uniting for Peace
27th March 2010 Wesley’s Chapel, 49 City Road, London EC1Y. AGM and Meeting held by Uniting for Peace (a joint Action for UN Renewal and World Disarmament Campaign meeting). Peace is a prerequisite for building a safer society which can live in harmony. We live in an interconnected and interdependent world. Violence and wars have to be consigned to history for humankind to make progress for a peaceful future. Speakers include John Jacob English (Free University of Ireland and author of ‘Collapse of the War System’) and Jeremy Corbyn MP. Chaired by Lord Peter Archer of Sandwell. Contributions also from Vijay Mehta, and Brian Cooper.
